INFORMATION RELEASE – VEHICLE ACCIDENT, Posted on 08/30/2023

Pagosa Fire Protection District was called to respond to a multi-vehicle accident reported at the US Highway 160 and Meadows Drive intersection at 8:59 a.m. on Wednesday August 30th, 2023. The notification was received through the 911 system managed by Archuleta County Combined Dispatch center.


The first arriving officer completed a scene size-up noting an accident scene with three vehicles. All vehicles were upright. Two vehicles were blocking the east bound lanes of Highway 160; one vehicle was blocking the west bound lanes.


The first arriving engine company accessed occupants of involved vehicles and prepared patients for transport. A total of three patients were transferred to awaiting ambulances. Firefighters assisted in patient transport by driving ambulances to local facility to allow medical personnel to assist patients.
Fluid leakage was contained and mitigated.


The position of the vehicles required both directions of the highway to be closed to provide a safe working environment for responders and investigators.


PFPD responded with one engine, two chief vehicles, one support vehicle, six paid personnel and two volunteers. Upper San Juan Hospital District responded with two ambulances. Archuleta County Sheriff’s Department, Colorado State Patrol, and a BLM Law Enforcement Officer responded to assist with traffic control and re-routing due to road closure.


PFPD was on scene for approx. one hour and twenty minutes.


There are no firefighter injuries to report. The accident is under investigation by Colorado State Patrol.
