Information Release – Vehicle Accident
Pagosa Fire Protection District was called to respond to a vehicle accident on US Highway 160 near mile
marker 160 at 6:08 p.m. on Monday, October 10th, 2022. The notification was received through the 911
system managed by Archuleta County Combined Dispatch center.
Archuleta County Sheriff’s Deputy was first on-scene and initiated aid to vehicle occupant. First arriving
fire officer completed a scene size up noting a one vehicle accident involving a semi-truck with driver still
inside. The vehicle was on its side, pushed up against a concrete barrier. The first arriving engine company
pulled a 1 ¾” hose line for fire suppression if needed. Extrication tools were staged as patient was being
accessed. Diesel fuel that had leaked from tanks was contained and cleaned from roadway. Tanks were
patched to prevent additional leakage.
On-scene fire apparatus provided emergency responder protection by continuing to block traffic lanes
while fuel spill was mitigated.
PFPD responded with two engines, one rescue truck, two chief vehicles, three volunteer firefighters and
six paid personnel. Upper San Juan Hospital District was on-scene. Colorado State Patrol units were also
on-scene conducting accident investigation and providing hazardous materials response.
PFPD was on scene for approx. two hours.
There are no firefighter injuries to report. The accident is under investigation by Colorado State Patrol.
