Press Release – Puerto Rico Hurricane Response

Once again, Pagosa Fire Protection District firefighters are lending a hand to other communities in need.

This time, Lt. Megan Macht is headed to the hurricane ravaged island Puerto Rico as Finance Section Chief 3 on an interagency incident management team. She will be assisting on the El Yunque National Forest on the East side of the island.  El Yunque NF is the only tropical rain forest within the national forest system.  At nearly 29,000 acres, it is one of the smallest in size, yet one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the forest system.

The IMT’s initial mission will include bringing supplies such as food, water, diapers, baby food, shelter tents, and communication equipment to residents of Puerto Rico.  The IMT’s secondary mission will be to provide support in the areas of operations, planning, logistics, and finance to the El Yunque NF in order for the forest to safely open back up to visitors and local forest employees to regain normalcy.  The deployment will last at least 14 days, possibly up to 30 days.
