Pagosa Fire Protection District was called to respond to a vehicle accident with entrapment on US Highway 160 at the intersection of Majestic Drive at 6:41 p.m. on Monday, January 10th, 2023. The notification was received through the 911 system managed by Archuleta County Combined Dispatch center.
A Pagosa Springs Police Department officer was first on-scene. First arriving fire officer completed a scene size up noting a three-vehicle accident. Two vehicles were on the highway and one vehicle was off the south shoulder of the roadway.
The first arriving engine company initiated occupant extrication on vehicle one upon arrival. Vehicle was found to have heavy front end and driver side damage with all airbags deployed. Firefighters used several techniques including cutting and spreading of doors and support posts. A dash roll was also needed to free entrapped occupant. Fluid leakage was contained and mitigated. Patient care was transferred to awaiting ambulance.
Vehicle two had moderate front end damage and front airbags had deployed. Occupants from vehicle two were able to self-extricate. All occupants were examined by medical personnel.
Vehicle three had heavy front end damage. Firefighters completed the removal of the driver door and driver side panel of vehicle utilizing extrication cutter and spreader tools. Fluid leakage was contained and mitigated.
PFPD responded with three engines, one rescue truck, two chief vehicles, two support vehicles, five volunteer firefighters and nine paid personnel. Upper San Juan Hospital District was on-scene. Colorado State Patrol units were also on-scene conducting accident investigation and providing hazardous materials response.
PFPD was on scene for approx. two hours.
There are no firefighter injuries to report. The accident is under investigation by Pagosa Springs Police Department.
