PAVING OPERATIONS TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY ON US 160 EAST OF PAGOSA

PAVING TOP MAT OF ASPHALT THROUGH US 84 INTERSECTION

LIKELY NEXT THURSDAY & FRIDAY (SEPTEMBER 13 & 14)

ARCHULETA/MINERAL COUNTIES ― With inclement weather likely tomorrow, crews plan to extend paving on US Highway (US) 160, east of Pagosa into this Saturday, September 8. Motorists will encounter single-lane, alternating traffic and delays near Treasure Falls area, approximately mile point (MP) 154 to 158, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

During the week of September 10 through 14, paving (the top, final layer of asphalt) will continue at the east end of the project during the early part of the week. Depending upon weather and work progress, crews anticipate the top mat of paving could begin through the intersection with US 84 on either Thursday, September 13, or Friday, September 14. The intersection paving will take up to two days to complete, so paving the second half could continue the following week of September 17. Roadway signs will indicate the date of intersection paving as soon as this is confirmed (as will the lane closure information on www.cotrip.org and on the project’s web site at www.codot.gov/projects/us-160-treasurefalls.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) cautions travelers that they will encounter lane closures and extended delays when crews are paving through the busy intersection with US 84.

Following intersection work, the top-mat paving will progress eastward, until the paving reaches the middle of this 14.3-mile work zone, at approximately MP 152. The project completion date will likely be in October, with final work items to include shouldering, striping, signing, roadside delineator installation, and mailbox replacement.

TRAVEL IMPACTS: Work hours are Monday through Friday (and some Saturdays, as necessary), from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Motorists may encounter periodic full lane closures and lengthy wait times of 15 to 30 minutes while this final top mat of paving is underway. Driveways and side roads could be closed for 30-60 minutes after the asphalt is placed, to allow compaction. Work zones are expected to be about 1.5-miles long.

PROJECT BACKGROUND: CDOT and contractor A & S Construction started the project in April. The project is scheduled for completion in October 2018.

The project, between MP 144.29 and 158.56, also includes:

  • Upgrading guardrails
  • Making improvements to three bridges (including new bridge rail, resurfacing, waterproofing and one expansion joint repair)
  • Patching and/or milling and resurfacing damaged sections of roadway
  • Widening truck chain station areas
  • Making embankment, culvert and ditch improvements

This highway resurfacing and safety-improvement project was contracted to A & S Construction for $7.5 million.
