INFORMATION RELEASE – DROWNING, Posted on 05/11/2023

Pagosa Fire Protection District was called to respond to a missing person in the water at Echo Lake, US Highway 84, at 5:33 p.m. on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. The notification was received through the 911 system managed by Archuleta County Combined Dispatch center.


First arriving fire officer established last know position of person in the water with the help of bystanders. Notification was made to incoming resources that water deployment would be necessary. First arriving engine company arrived and began to deploy rescue boat and don protective dry suits. Search commenced near the last known location. One person was retrieved from the water with assistance from Archuleta County personnel. Resuscitation efforts were initiated immediately upon retrieval.


PFPD responded with two engines, one rescue truck, two chief vehicles, one support vehicle, one fire marshal vehicle, four volunteer firefighters and nine paid personnel. Upper San Juan Hospital District and Archuleta County Sheriff’s Department were also on-scene.


PFPD was on scene for approx. one hour.


There are no firefighter injuries to report. The accident is under investigation by Archuleta County Coroner.
